Bruce Springsteen

The Boss - Bruce Springsteen

I was in my back office at Tower Records in San Mateo when the comm line buzzed and it was the Video Store Manager John Wiseman; who told me to come to his store immediately. I popped over the his office and he said “You are not going to believe this” Bruce Springsteen is in the store…I said “ I wonder if he will wander over to the Record Store”. Bruce was not on a tour and we were wondering why he would venture into our store? Sure enough Bruce stacked his laser discs on the counter and ventured into the Record Store. I wanted to be polite and give him space, so after about 30 minutes of him browsing, I went over to him and asked him if he was finding everything he was looking for… he had a stack of about 20 CD’s. He looked at me and asked if we had any Lonnie Liston Smith? I said “you mean from Pharoah Sanders band”? and Bruce replied “and Miles Davis Band”…yes of course right over here. Leading him over to the section I asked Bruce what he was doing in San Mateo. he said his parents had lived here for a time and his Mom was currently living in Hillsborough. I said cool, Glad you came in.. let me know if you need anything. As he wondered the isles I couldn't help but notice, nobody recognized him. Of course it was 9:30 in the morning and it was typically a slow time in the store. Bruce eventually made his way to the counter with his stack and promptly paid for his bounty with a Platinum American express card with The Bruce Springsteen Estate stamped on it. I did not ask him for his autograph but after he left, the Video store manager and I copied the receipt on our copy machine…does that count?
