Meeting Bob Dylan

Bob Dylan and his band came through town and were doing 2 shows at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium. It is really a nice sweet old venue, overlooked by many touring bands, probably because of it’s theatre type seating. There is a floor section for some General Admission. Bob had an incredible band on this tour, including his guitar player Charlie Sexton. I had worked with Charlie through MCA records in the 90’s so I had a professional relationship with him. Prior to the show starting at the Civic, I sent a current business card back stage through a bouncer to Charlie with a note on the back of the card “Let’s meet up”. The bouncer eventually returned and said Charlie said to meet him in the parking lot immediately after the show. I figured that meant that there was no Back Stage area set up or no Dilly Dally after show. The concert was smooth and exciting, Santa Cruz is a Bob Dylan town! Immediately as the last note was played I bee lined for the rear parking lot, Sure enough the band had already assembled in a Town Car which was idling. I spotted Charlie in the back seat with 3 or 4 others. I walked over to the car and looked in and said to Charlie Sexton….”Amazing performance tonight. You guys were awesome? He Thanked me, we shook hands and sitting right next to him in the Town Car was Bob Dy;an. Of course Charlie says Hey Ric, do you want to meet Bob?” I looked squarely at him stuck my hand out and said “ Nice show Bob” he cordially shook my hand and said “Do you think so?” “Thanks” and I replied “Absolutely”. Charlie said they were heading to San Francisco where they were staying. “Gotta run” he said…as the Town Car pulled out into the night.
